CV Sanitary District Candidate Statement: John Maher

We asked: What do you view as the biggest challenge facing CV San now, and how will you work to address it in the next four years? How does CV San impact Castro Valley, and how will you support a working partnership between your agency and the community? Finally, please address increased connection fees for residences and businesses. Are costs for CV San going up at the same rate, and are there new costs that were not anticipated? If so, what changed?
In my view, the biggest challenge for CVSan in the near future is the relocation and unforeseen expenses of the main office to consolidate all elements of the district into one location. After many years, the district will be moving to a different location and I plan to keep a sharp eye on the cost of the venture and make sure the transition is a smooth one.
I believe that the district plays a very important role in the Castro Valley community. This includes not only education for our public and private schools, but for our local business as well. As an accountable local institution, it is our duty to educate, inform, and help our community to be informed about waste and recycling as well as to keep our environment as clean and beautiful as possible.
I would consider it my duty as a board member to keep costs as low as possible for the district’s community, as well as local businesses to encourage growth and a sense of responsibility of the elected officials.
